You're reading: Tymoshenko sues government in European court

Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has asked the European Court of Human Rights to rule on whether domestic criminal probes against her are politically motivated.

Tymoshenko, now in opposition, has been charged with misallocating hundreds of millions of dollars while in office.

She is also accused of abuse of office in striking a deal with Moscow to buy Russian natural gas at prices that officials say were too high.

Tymoshenko, who denies all the charges, said Wednesday she hopes the European court will find that the charges against her amount to "political repression."

She says that the probe against her and her close allies have been masterminded by President Viktor Yanukovych to silence the opposition.

The government has rejected the claim.

Tymoshenko is to stand trial in the gas imports case Friday.
