You're reading: Ukraine cuts electricity consumption by 6.4 percent in five months

Electricity consumption in Ukraine in January-May 2016, including in-process losses on Ukrainian power grids, decreased by 6.4 percent compared to the same period in 2015, to 62.796 billion kilowatt-hours.

A source in the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry told Interfax-Ukraine electricity consumption, excluding in-process losses on Ukrainian power grids, decreased by 5.4 percent for the first five months of this year, to 50.258 billion kWh.

Industrial enterprises, excluding technological losses, reduced electricity consumption by 5.9 percent, to 20.629 billion kWh. In particular steel industry consumed 11.809 billion (5.4 percent down compared to January-May 2015), fuel 1.531 billion kWh (29.7 percent down), machinery 1.637 billion kWh (2.2 percent up), chemical and petrochemical 1.340 billion kWh (8.3 percent down), food and processing 1.656 billion kWh (2.1 percent up), construction materials 820.3 million kWh (4.2 percent up), others 1.836 billion kWh (2 percent up).

In addition, agricultural companies consumed 1.341 billion kWh (3 percent up), transport 2.906 billion kWh (2.3 percent down), construction 368.4 million kWh (5.4 percent up).

The population of the country in the five months in 2016 consumed 15.825 billion kWh (7 percent down), municipal consumers 6.515 billion kWh (4.4 percent down), other non-industrial users 2.673 kWh (2.4 percent down).
