You're reading: Ukraine falls to 135th position in Economic Freedom of the World report

Ukraine has lost seven positions in the Fraser Institute’s annual Economic Freedom of the World report, falling to 135th position among 159 countries and territories, Canada's Fraser Institute has said in its report on Thursday.

“The worst situation in Ukraine is with sound money (153rd in the world) and freedom to trade internationally (131st). The country showed goods results in the size of government (70th) and regulation (71st),” the Ukrainian Economic Freedom Foundation (UEFF) that took part in the study said in a press release.

The report is based on 2014 statistics. The 10 point scale was used to assess the countries with 10th highest economic freedom.

For Ukraine freedom to trade internationally fell from 6.8 to 6.0 in a year, sound money – from 6.5 to 5.9 and size of government – from 6.8 to 6.5.

The situation in bank, labor and business regulation improved – the indicator grew from 6.2 to 6.7. Judicial independence and protection of property rights grew from 4.8 to 4.9.

According to the report, the top 10 most economically free jurisdictions are Hong Kong (which continues its streak of number one rankings), Singapore, New Zealand, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, Mauritius, Jordan, Ireland and Canada, with the United Kingdom and Chile tied for 10th. Lithuania was 15th, Estonia – 19th, Poland 40th and Russia 102nd.
