Ukraine is preparing a national climate change adaptation plan, the State Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine has reported.

“Today, Ukraine is preparing the national climate change adaptation
plan. The plan will concern all the economic sectors, including
agriculture, energy and healthcare. In the near term it will be sent to
the Cabinet of Ministers for consideration,” the head of the greenhouse
gas emission department of the agency, Valentyn Shlykhta, told reporters
in Ivano-Frankivsk at a conference entitled “the Energy Efficiency in
Agriculture” on June 7, 2013.

He said that the issues of reducing greenhouse gas emissions are
discussed at annual conferences of the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change.

“If earlier we discussed the prevention of the climate change, today,
the world is speaking about the fact that we cannot prevent the climate
change. We’re speaking about the need to adapt,” Shlykhta said.

He said that in Ukraine agriculture is third in greenhouse gas
emissions after the energy sector and industry. Effective agricultural
machinery, which burns fewer lubricants, should be used, and the
treatment of agricultural waste and biomass for power generation should
be developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Shlykhta said that the annual greenhouse gas emissions in Ukraine
amount to over 400 million tonnes in the CO2 equivalent, and in 2011 it
grew by 5% compared to 2010.
