Kyiv is ready to establish diplomatic relations with the Republic of South Sudan, says the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.

"Ukraine considers the proclamation of the independence of the new state – the Republic of South Sudan – the logical consequence of holding a referendum on the self-determination of the territory in January this year," Director of the Information Policy Department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Oleh Voloshyn said at a press briefing on Tuesday.

According to him, Kyiv hopes that close cooperation of the international community with South Sudan will allow the country to ensure sustainable development.

"Ukraine is ready to establish bilateral relations with South Sudan and develop mutually beneficial cooperation," Voloshyn said.

South Sudan’s Salva Kiir was sworn in as president of the world’s newest nation on Saturday during a ceremony formally declaring independence from Sudan in the north.
