Ukraine has started talks with Turkey on the shipment of natural gas via a new route, Energy and Coal Industry Minister of Ukraine Yuriy Boiko told journalists in Kyiv on Jan. 13.

“We have entered into negotiations with our Turkish partners on gas shipments via a new route. I hope that in late January we will present specific proposals and start the actual talks with them,” Boyko said.

The purpose, according to Boyko, would be to diversify away from increasingly expensive Russian gas imports. But he did not elaborate on how such shipments would make their way to Ukraine given Ukraine’s lack of a liquefied natural gas terminal and direct gas pipeline connections with Turkey.
