It is almost impossible to tell the exact number of Crimean Tatars who have been imprisoned after Russia's occupation of the peninsula. Currently over two dozen people are being held in jail. The Ukrainians who did not recognise Crimea as part of Russia are now accused of terrorism and extremism.The first ones to become Russian prisoners were Akhtem Chiygoz, Ali Asanov, and Mustafa Degermendzi. In early 2015, the men were accused of organising mass riots near the building of Crimean parliament during Russia's occupation of the peninsula.
