Ukrainian Interior Minister Anatoliy Mohyliov and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft have signed protocol No. 9 to the memorandum of understanding in the sphere of law enforcement between the governments of the two states.
Under the protocol, the U.S. government will fund the improvement of work of Ukraine’s law enforcement agencies, in particular, strengthening the fight against cyber crime and human trafficking, according to the Interior Ministry’s press service.
The memorandum between Ukraine and the United States has been in effect since Dec 9, 2002.
The document was signed due to the necessity to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against crime.
"This year many of our colleagues visited the United States and received the necessary experience in organizing more effective work in some areas," the interior minister said.
He thanked the U.S. ambassador for giving Ukrainian law enforcers the chance to train at U.S. special centres.
The minister also assured the ambassador that the organization of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry would be brought in line with European police structures.
At the end of the meeting, Mohyliov and Tefft discussed the training of Ukrainian policemen to maintain order during the Euro 2012 European Football Championship.
Mohyliov said that Ukrainian officers were actively learning experience of their European colleagues, and added that the Ukrainian policemen would be up to the task.
