You're reading: Ukrainian deputy calls for referendum in March

Mykola Rudkovsky, a member of the Party of Regions faction of the Ukrainian parliament, believes the parliament should pass a law on referendum this week and hold a referendum on a number of key political issues in March.

“This week, we should adopt a law on referendum […] and hold a referendum next month on several issues, including on whether Ukraine should be a parliamentary republic or a presidential republic, whether elections should be held on a proportion or majority basis, the lifting of parliamentary immunity, land privatization, and whether Ukraine is moving in the direction of Europe or the Customs Union,” Rudkovsky said in the parliament on Tuesday.

The parliamentarian said he is confident that the referendum will make it possible to adopt a new text of the Ukrainian Constitution. After that, early elections of the parliament and local councils should be conducted because “we are expanding the powers of the parliament.”

Rudkovsky also said he is convinced that the president of Ukraine should be elected by the parliament.

On Jan. 27, Rudkovsky registered a draft decree in the parliament on early elections of the parliament and local self-government bodies.
