You're reading: Ukrainian peacekeepers return from Liberia with malaria

Some 45 peacekeepers have been hospitalized in Mykolaiv after returning from Liberia, the press service of the Ukrainian Health Ministry reported on Wednesday.

The servicemen are reported to be suffering from malaria.

Some 42 peacekeepers have been already discharged from hospital.

They underwent a two-day monitoring period to assess the effectiveness of their treatment.

The press service reported that a helicopter detachment of personnel of the peacekeeping contingent that is operating as part of the UN Mission in Liberia arrived in the Mykolaiv International Airport on June 28.

Some 160 were immediately tested for malaria.

As a result of the examination, some 87 parasite carriers were found, of which 68 were the carriers of tropical malaria.

In addition, a sanitary inspection of transport was carried out, and the passengers of a plane were questioned about the state of their health.
