The UN Security Council, extremely convened in connection with the situation in Ukraine, has expressed support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine and called on all the parties for a political dialogue and reminded about the implementation of international agreements, including the Budapest Memorandum.

Deputy Permanent Representative of Lithuania to the United Nations Security Council Rita Kazragiene expressed the position of the UN Security Council after its meeting in New York on Friday.

“During the discussion, the UN expressed support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The Council considers the restraint of all political players in Ukraine to be important and calls for a political dialogue,” the Lithuanian diplomat said.

In addition, she said that during the debate “we reminded about the obligations for all to fulfill multilateral and bilateral agreements, including the Budapest Memorandum of 1994 (in this document Russia acted as the guarantor of Ukrainian borders) and the agreement between Ukraine and Russia dated 1997.”

Asked about the upcoming international mediatory mission to Crimea, Kazragiene reported the proposal has been just made and should be considered.
