President Viktor Yanukovych on Oct. 18 met his counterpart Hugo Chavez from Venzuela.

Greeting his guest, Yanukoych said that he appriciates the fact that Chavez accepted his invitation to visit Ukraine. "A lot of time has been lost between our two countries, and now we can expect a deepening of cooperation," Yanuvovych said, according to his press service. "I hope that we can discuss a number of issues with you."

The head of state noted that that during the latest five years Ukraine has traveled a tortuous path, but now political stability has been restored. Economic growth has been restarted and the state is moving forward, the president said.

Hugo Chavez responded that his visit to Ukraine is important. "You Ukrainians have a deep appreciation of independence and sovereignty. We are both fighting for the same thing [in our respective countries] …. We are fighting for independence, development, and the sovereignty of our
states," Chavez said.
