KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – U.S. consul general Gregory Paul Hulka, his 10-year-old daughter Abigail and another relative were killed in a road accident in central Ukraine, the U.S. Embassy said Tuesday. Hulka, 44, was traveling Friday to a family wedding party in western Ukraine and was killed on a road between the towns of Uman and Nemyriv, the embassy said in a statement.

It gave no other details of the accident. The state-run UT-1 TV channel said the consul’s car tried to overtake a truck in poor visibility conditions and crashed into a minibus which was coming in the opposite direction. Also killed in the accident was consul’s relative Yury Kotik, a Ukrainian citizen.

Their loss is deeply felt by the entire Embassy community, the statement said. Hulka, of Ukrainian descent, was born in Inglewood, California, and spent 15 years in the U.S. Foreign Service as a diplomat in Russia, Honduras and China. He was posted to Kyiv in early September. He is survived by his wife, Jane, and three children, Andrew, 12, Alexander, 6, and Aaron, 3.
