U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vice President of the European Commission Catherine Ashton had a meeting in New York on September 23, during which, among other subjects, they discussed the upcoming parliamentary elections in Ukraine, according to the Web site of the U.S. Department of State.

According to the report, Clinton and Ashton said that the U.S. and Europe were working closely in terms of pressing for and supporting free and fair parliamentary elections in Ukraine scheduled for October 28. “Ukraine is hugely important to European security and stability,” the statement reads.

“We have been very clear how much we regret what we see as selective prosecutions, including the imprisonment of former Prime Minister [Yulia] Tymoshenko,” Clinton and Ashton said.

The U.S. State Secretary and the EU High Representative agreed the U.S. and the European Union really have the same policy, which is to say that their relations with Ukraine can only really move forward when they see an end of those selective prosecutions and free and fair elections.

They also talked about how they can use the time between now and October 28 to support those goals.
