Ukraine recycled only 5.1 percent of total household waste in 2015 (1.9 million cubic meters), according to an analysis drawn up by the National Commission for Energy, Housing and Utilities Services Regulation (NCER).

The data does not include annexed Crimea, temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Volyn region and partially Kyiv region, as their regional administrations have not provided information.

“In 2015, 35.67 million cubic meters or 6.96 million tonnes of household waste was buried on landfills… A total of 1.9 million cubic meters was recycled or around 5.1 percent of total household waste collected. 99.8 percent of recycled waste was in Kyiv. 1 percent of collected waste was sorted. The rest of waste (93.9 percent) is burred to landfills,” the commission said.

According to regional administrations, around 424,200 cubic meters of waste have not reached landfills.

Today waste collection services are provided to 81.3 percent of households and 54.9 percent in rural areas.
