President of the European Commission for Democracy through Law (the Venice Commission) Gianni Buquicchio has said that the introduction of constitutional amendments should be the task of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, rather than being the subject of a referendum.

“It [constitutional reform] should be the task of the Verkhovna Rada, not a referendum,” the Verkhovna Rada’s press service quoted him as saying at a meeting with Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Rybak on Tuesday.

Buquicchio said that constitutional reform should “go the normal way – through the Verkhovna Rada.”

Rybak, in turn, said “the successful holding of constitutional reform could be the cornerstone of political stability in our country.”
