Ukraine needs a more balanced constitution, President of the Venice Commission Gianni Buquicchio has said.

"I think Ukraine deserves a better constitution, a more balanced one," he said in Kyiv on Friday at an international conference to mark the 15th anniversary of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

He stressed that all political forces in Ukraine have to join efforts to carry out this task.

"I call on all political forces of Ukraine to work in this direction. This is also the opinion of the Ukrainian president. And I also insist that all political forces should be focused and inclined to conciliation," Buquicchio said.

The Venice Commission president said that "it’s time to move forward as quick as possible" for Ukraine.

According to him, Ukraine should reform the judiciary system, prosecution, and the election legislation.

"I mentioned several spheres in which the Venice Commission could offer its cooperation and participation," he said.

Buquicchio and Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Ukraine Anatoliy Holovin delivered statements during a break in the conference.

Reporters had no opportunity to ask questions.

The Constitution of Ukraine was adopted in 1996.
