You're reading: Western sanctions didn’t prevent Russia’s Almaz-Antey from improving its world market position

The Almaz-Antey air defense concern has improved its position in the international ranking of major arms manufacturers despite Western sanctions, the press service of the concern reports.

“The sanctions unjustifiably imposed by Western countries against the concern only confirmed the great significance of our company’s output for securing Russia’s defense capability and did not impact our working plans. We are sure that the sanctions are nothing but an element of unfair competition,” Almaz-Antey General Director Yan Novikov said as quoted by the press service.

This was his comment on the news that Almaz-Antey climbed to 11th place in the TOP-100 ranking of major world manufacturers of military-purpose goods compiled by U.S. Defense News weekly based on performance in 2014 and kept the leadership among Russian defense industry companies. Last year it placed 12th in the ranking.

“Despite certain difficulties, the 100,000-strong collective of the concern succeeded in concentrating its efforts on the fulfillment of the state defense contract and on the development of advanced air defense systems for the national Armed Forces,” Novikov said.

“All our commitments both under the state defense contract and effective export contracts will be carried out in full and in due time,” Novikov said.

According to the press service, companies were ranked by the volume of sales of military-purpose goods. According to Defense News estimates, the sales of Almaz-Antey in 2014 stood at $9.2 billion which is up 10% against 2013.

There are seven other Russian defense industry companies in the TOP-100 in addition to Almaz-Antey: the United Aircraft Corporation is 14th with sales of $6.24 billion, Helicopters of Russia – 23rd ($3.96 billion), the United Engine Corporation – 26th ($3.32 billion), Tactical Missiles Corporation – 31st ($2.8 billion), Uralvagonzavod – 52nd ($1.54 billion) and RTI Systems – 69th ($947 million).

The TOP-100 ranking of leading world manufacturers of military goods has been compiled by Defense News since 2000 and is one of the most reputable in the world.
