You're reading: Yanukovych calls on Ukrainians to commemorate victims of World War II

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has addressed his compatriots on the occasion of the Time of Remembrance and Reconciliation for Those Who Lost Their Lives during the Second World War.

“Today we are commemorating all those who lost their lives during the Second World War. Ukraine, where the most decisive operations took place in 1941-1944, experienced an especially hard fate. Our people paid with millions of lives for their freedom,” reads the president’s address posted on the Web site of the head of state.

“We overcame that tragedy with deep understanding of the necessity to solve global problems of humanity peacefully. In support of the decision of the United Nations Organization to maintain stability in the world, our state will continue to participate actively in the prevention of international military conflicts,” Yanukovych said.

The president stressed that each person’s sacred duty is to commemorate those who lost their lives and take care of the living and future generations.
