You're reading: Yanukovych: Euro 2012 infrastructure in Ukraine to serve many generations

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said he believes that the infrastructure built in Ukraine as part of preparations for the Euro 2012 European Football Championship will serve Ukrainians in future.

"I’m confident that the infrastructure built in Ukraine will serve many generations," he said at a meeting with UEFA President Michel Platini in Kyiv on Tuesday.

Yanukovych said he was proud that he, along with Platini, had a chance to participate in Ukraine’s preparations for this tournament.

"This is a historic event in the life of our country," he said.

Yanukovych said the Euro 2012 preparations filled the life of the UEFA president, as well as life in Ukraine, with new meaning.

"Ukraine is a footballing country. What we lack sometimes is a beautiful game at our favorite clubs. We hope that they will please us with their results," he said.

Platini, in turn, on behalf of the UEFA delegation, congratulated Yanukovych and Deputy Prime Minister Borys Kolesnikov on progress in Ukraine’s preparations for Euro 2012.

"We visited several cities in Ukraine. I was very surprised with the progress in infrastructure development," he said.
