You're reading: Yanukovych orders government to take care of those injured in Stirol ammonia incident

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has instructed the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to provide all the necessary assistance to the people injured as a result of the August 6 ammonia blowout at Stirol Concern's plant in Horlivka, Donetsk region.

“The head of state has instructed the government and, in particular Health Minister Raisa Bohatyriova, and Head of Donetsk Regional State Administration Andriy Shyshatsky to provide those injured with all the necessary assistance,” the presidential press service reported on Tuesday.

The president also expects to receive a report soon from the government task force headed by Deputy Prime Minister Yuriy Boiko, which is investigating the causes and aftermath of the accident.

Yanukovych also ordered the government to take steps to improve safety at industrial enterprises of Ukraine.

As reported, there was an ammonia blowout during overhauls at the No. 1 Plant of PJSC Stirol Concern on August. Five people were killed and around 20 people were injured in the accident.

According to preliminary findings, a gas leak occurred due to an ammonia pipeline failure.

Stirol is one of Ukraine’s biggest chemical producers. Ostchem is a managing company that coordinates the strategy of six fertilizer companies belonging to Group DF of Dmytro Firtash, four of which are located in Ukraine: Stirol Concern, Severodonetsk Azot, Cherkasy Azot and Rivneazot.
