You're reading: Yanukovych says language issue is no longer a tool of political games

Ukraine is implementing the European Charter for Regional and Minority Languages, and politicians will have no opportunity to speculate on the language matter any more, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.

"The law on languages is currently being examined by the Venice Commission and the European Charter will be implemented in Ukraine," Yanukovych said in an interview with national television channels that was recorded on Friday and aired on Tuesday.

According to the head of state, political speculations regarding the language issue have not affected the attitude of people towards their mother tongue.

"With regard to the public, I would say the following: nothing has changed as a result of these political fights. People spoke Ukrainian and they are continuing to speak, [they spoke] Russian and they are continuing to speak… The game with the language was a way of cheap politics in the state," the president said.

Yanukovych also assured that all conditions would be created in the country for the equal use of regional languages.
