You're reading: Yanukovych: Ukraine seeks average European prices for Russian gas imports

Ukraine is determined to have the price at which it buys natural gas from Russia to be reduced to a level that is not higher than that at which other European countries buy it, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said.

“Certainly, we are not going to stop negotiations with our partners, with Russia. We will be seeking compromises on our agreements, but the goal of these agreements for us is to have a gas price that is not higher than in European countries and our neighbors,” Yanukovych said at a meeting with the heads of district administrations in Kyiv on Jan. 13.

Yanukovych insisted that the state cannot allow its citizens to suffer from the imperfections of the 2009 Ukrainian-Russian gas supply agreement.

“Definitely, this issue is heavily politicized both in our country and outside it,” he said.
