You're reading: Yanukovych wishes Obama good luck at election

New York – Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych had a brief conversation with President of the United States Barack Obama at the U.S. president's reception on the occasion of the opening of the 67th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York on Monday, September 24.

“There was a ceremony of photographing with President Obama, and during that meeting we had a brief conversation,” Yanukovych told Ukrainian journalists in New York on Tuesday, September 25.

According to the Ukrainian president, Obama asked him about the delivery of equipment to a new laboratory in Kharkiv that will work on low-enriched uranium.

Yanukovych told his U.S. counterpart that all of the work was going strictly to schedule.

“We’re effectively fulfilling the U.S.-Ukraine nuclear non-proliferation treaty,” Yanukovych said.

“The rest of the conversation was private. Short remarks. Our previous meeting was in Chicago and we both noted that time passes very quickly. The [presidential] election will be held in the U.S. in November, and of course I wished [Obama] good luck and said that we are also preparing for the [parliamentary] elections, and we really hope that they will be declared democratic,” the Ukrainian president said.
