You're reading: Yatseniuk: Claims of Tymoshenko’s involvement in Scherban murder jeopardizing EU-Ukraine summit

The statement by Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine that former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is suspected of organizing the murder of businessman and lawmaker Yevhen Scherban in 1996 jeopardizes the holding of the upcoming Ukraine-EU summit, and this may be in the interests of Russia, leader of the Batkivschyna parliamentary faction Arseniy Yatseniuk has said.

“I have several theories about what happened. As the news [about the
PGO’s suspicions] calls into question the holding of the EU-Ukraine
summit, I do not rule out that other countries, including Russia, were
interested in there being such developments. The issues of Ukraine’s
European prospects and freeing Yulia Tymoshenko should not only be
raised at the upcoming summit, but be resolved there,” Yatseniuk said in
an interview with the Korrespondent magazine, published on his Web site
on Monday.

“This also may be the consequences of a struggle within the
president’s entourage. The opening of a new criminal case against
Tymoshenko has destroyed whatever remained of the trust in [Ukrainian
President Viktor] Yanukovych,” he added.
