You're reading: Yuschenko: Tymoshenko ignored presidential directive when signing gas contracts

Ukraine's third President (2005-2010) Viktor Yuschenko has said that while signing the gas agreements with Russia in 2009, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko ignored his directive and did not wait for approval from the government.

"And we got ourselves into unforeseen problems for almost ten years," he told journalists on Thursday, while commenting on the criminal case against Tymoshenko.

There was no formal decision of the government authorizing the signing of gas contracts before the talks in Moscow in 2009, Yuschenko said.

Yuschenko added that Tymoshenko had not abided by his directives.

The ex-president said there was a combination of political motives behind this.

Yuschenko said he wondered what arguments had made Russian Premier Vladimir Putin accept this deal.
