Russia ‘Annexes’ Ukraine

The giant banner unveiled by Russian supporters in Warsaw at the heavily politicized Poland-Russia Euro 2012 football match. The banner was criticized by many Poles as emblematic of Russia’s bullying, imperialist attitude towards former Communist-bloc states. More than two decades after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of Russia’s neighbors feel they are still treated as subjects, not sovereign states. The Russian Olympic Committee’s decision to list former Soviet territories as still belonging to Russia in athletes’ biographies has simply fueled the frustration.
