Ukraine has in the last 20 years been a consistent supporter of the course for ensuring global nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said at the nuclear security summit in Seoul on Tuesday, March 27.
According to the presidential press service, the head of state said that a confirmation of this was the organization in Ukraine of one of the main international forums on the strengthening of nuclear security in 2011 – the Kyiv summit on the safe and innovative use of nuclear energy and Ukraine's participation in a high-level meeting of the UN General Assembly on nuclear safety and security.

"I'm confident that the broad support for our initiatives put forward as part of these events will facilitate the strengthening of physical nuclear security at the national and global levels," Yanukovych said.

He also noted the initiative on the start of talks on the creation of zones free from nuclear weapons and highly enriched uranium, with respective guarantees from nuclear states.

"It is important to create in Ukraine, with the active participation of the IAEA, an international research center to study man-made risks in the use of nuclear energy," Yanukovych added.
