Minsk - Belarus will continue to develop and upgrade infrastructure along its border with Ukraine and near a nuclear power plant (NPP) currently under construction on Belarusian territory, the presidential press service told Interfax.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on Aug. 7 outlining measures to develop and modernize the country’s border infrastructure and infrastructure in districts located near the border.

“The adoption of this decree was prompted by the need to create conditions for tackling tasks concerning the construction of new infrastructure on the Belarusian-Ukrainian section of the border and in the direction of the Belarusian NPP construction side,” the press service said.

The document stipulates that the Belarusian Border Guard Service should be given additional land plots to build the required border installations. However, the country’s laws do not permit this work to be completed within the set time and without additional spending.

“For these purposes, the decree envisions the creation of special conditions to boost the efficiency of budget funds spending when equipping the state border,” the press service said.

The establishment of such special conditions will help simplify the procedure for providing the Border Guard Service with land plots located in the immediate vicinity of the border. Steps will also be taken to simplify the procedure for drafting design documents as part of such projects.

The Belarusian nuclear power plant is being built in the Grodno district, 30 kilometers from the Belarusian-Lithuanian border and some 50 kilometers from Vilnius.
