You're reading: Brok says successful Ukraine will put an end to Putin’s system

Chair of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee Elmar Brok has said he thinks that a successful Ukraine will put an end to the system of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“A successful Ukraine, as a democratic state that will create prosperity and economic stability for its citizens, is unthinkable for Russia. It can undermine the credibility of Putin’s system. Therefore, Russia has every reason to behave the way it behaves,” he said in an interview with Deutsche Welle.

At the same time, he named “two serious clauses of violations of the Minsk agreements,” in particular, the fact that Russia is supplying weapons to the east of Ukraine and the so-called elections held in the militant-controlled area on November 2.

He also said that sanctions were exerting pressure on Russia.

“Sanctions are in effect, and they are not just a means of pressure, like, say, a ban on entry or something else. Extensive sanctions pose a huge economic burden for Russia,” Brok said.
