The Ukrainian government has decided to introduce restrictions on exports of types of coal which is in short supply, Energy and Coal Industry Minister Yuriy Prodan has said.

“The government has decided on the licensing and setting quotas on exports of types of power-generating coal which is in short supply,” Prodan told reporters in Kyiv on Nov. 12.

He said that the decision is linked to information from customs services, according to which the volumes of the said types of coal could be removed from Ukraine.

A shortage of some types of power-generating coal (non-bituminous coal and anthracite coal) appeared in Ukraine due to a conflict in Donbas where these types of coal was mainly extracted. The Energy and Coal Industry Ministry said that around one million tonnes of the said types of coal is to be imported to Ukraine a month, including around 330,000-350,000 tonnes for state-rune Centrenergo.

The ministry at present has decided not to buy coal from state coalmines located on the rebel-controlled territories of Donbas.
