European Commissioner for Energy Gunther Oettinger has said that a fair price for Ukraine to pay for Russian gas is $350-380 per 1,000 cubic meters, which is roughly equivalent to the current gas price in the EU, he said in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

“The $485 dollars demanded by Gazprom is unwarranted,” he said.

Oettinger said that the cancellation of the discount for staying of the Russian Black Sea Navy in Crimea was inadmissible.

He called on Ukraine to pay for gas supplied by Russia, and he called on Gazprom to continue supplies and not demand advance payments.

Oettinger hopes that the gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine will be settled by the end of May.

The European commissioner does not support a proposal of Poland on the creation of the European Energy Union.

“Gas is a product, not a policy weapon for the EU,” he said.

Oettinger said that he supports the development of the EU’s gas pipeline network in order to increase connectivity between member states and enhance energy security. The commissioner proposed increasing obligatory gas stocks to the 50-60 day consumption level.
