European Council President Donald Tusk and Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas said on Jan. 9 during a meeting in Tallinn that sanctions against Russia should continue.

“The European Union should stay true to their policies and not to make any concessions until such time until you [Russia] complete the Minsk agreements, but yet it remains in annexed Crimea”, the Estonian government’s press service told Interfax, citing the Estonian prime minister.

“Europe remains united with fortitude, a true alliance is the best strategy to respond to the aggression of Russia”, he added.

Roivas also said that at the Riga Eastern Partnership Summit, scheduled for May, the European Union should lend its Eastern partners a helping hand in supporting reform in these countries in order to facilitate their entry into Europe.

“Estonia wishes to introduce visa-free relations for Georgia and Ukraine, who have performed the necessary conditions,” said Roivas, expressing hope that in May the European Union will be able to send Ukraine and Georgia a clear signal on this issue.

Tusk confirmed the importance of European unity, saying that the European Union should maintain its unity in defending solidarity, freedom and democracy, and that Europe is not going to compromise on its fundamental values and security.

Tusk and Roivas went on to say that in 2015, negotiations between the EU and the United States on a free trade agreement and investment should be completed.
