Chisinau - President of the Republic of Moldova and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces Nicolae Timofti has said that "dangerous and terrible" developments in Ukraine in recent months oblige Moldova to have a well-trained army composed of professionals.

Dangerous developments in Ukraine confirm the necessity for a well-trained professional army, which is to be ready to handle any foreign danger, the president said on Wednesday morning at an event held by the Defense Ministry on the occasion of the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of Moldova’s National Army.

He said that the present situation was forcing the country to put forward new requirements for the professional training of all components of its armed forces.

Timofti stressed the importance of continuing to professionalize the army, and reestablish it as a modern national institution with European aspirations.
