You're reading: Ex-congressman: US Congress has not yet entirely approved Ukraine Freedom Support Act

Former U.S. Congressman Jim Slattery believes that the adoption by the U.S. Senate of the Ukraine Freedom Support Act of 2014 suggests that the United States stands with Ukraine in its struggle against Russian aggression.

He told reporters in Kyiv on Dec. 12 that in his opinion, this gesture shows
that the U.S. Senate believes in a free and independent Ukraine, as well as the
fact that the U.S. Senate stands with Ukraine, and will help it resist Russian
aggression.

However, according to Slattery, there is still no agreement between the two
houses of the Congress on this act.

He said he was not sure, but believed that the U.S. president would soon
receive a mandate to provide assistance to Ukraine over this issue, but added he
did not know in what form this assistance would come. Slattery said he did not
think that the Senate and the House of Representatives had already reached
agreement on the form of this bill to be passed to the president.

However, according to the ex-congressman, despite the fact that this bill was
not passed by the Congress as a whole, other laws envisaging assistance to the
Ukrainian people were passed earlier.
