MOSCOW - Germany hopes for the prolongation of the ceasefire regime in eastern Ukraine and the signing of an agreement between the conflict parties on the withdrawal of weapons of a caliber less than 100 mm, Andreas Peschke, German Federal Foreign Office Director for Eastern Europe, said in an interview with Interfax.
“We hope that there will be some concrete progress in the working groups [of the Trilateral Contact Group for Ukraine]. They might conclude an agreement on the withdrawal of some types of weapons, lighter weapons, up to 100 mm [in caliber]. I think this will be a very important step. That would be an important step to solidify, to strengthen the ceasefire that was put in place on September 1,” Peschke said.
The German diplomat also expressed hope that “they [the parties] will also renew their commitment to withdraw heavier weapons and tanks, because that would be a significant step to really make the ceasefire durable and stable.”
