You're reading: Hug says OSCE does not see Maryinka as strategic asset

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) does not see the town of Maryinka in Donetsk Region as a strategic asset, which is why it sees the latest attack on it as an element in reaching a different target.

This is some sort of refocusing the use of tactical weapons and personnel: previously, violence was concentrated mainly in the north and northwest of Donetsk, the deputy chief of the OSCE special monitoring mission Alexander Hug told the Ukrainian Security Council via a video link in Kyiv on June 5.

The economically and strategically important city of Avdiyivka was a strategic target, Maryinka cannot be a target but it can be a means of reaching a different target, Hug said.

In his view, the situation in Maryinka is a new development.
