You're reading: ICRC has no plans to curtail its presence in Ukraine

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has no plans to curtail its presence in Ukraine; it is ready to carry on the humanitarian mission in the east, Laurent Corbaz, ICRC Head of Operations for Europe and Central Asia, said at his meeting with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin in Kyiv on Oct. 7.

Klimkin emphasized the importance of further ICRC operations in Ukraine, including delivering humanitarian aid to the eastern regions, and expressed confidence that the upcoming expansion of the OSCE monitoring mission would build security levels for ICRC workers, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry press service said.

He said he was very sorry about the death of the ICRC worker in a shelling incident in Donetsk and assured Corbaz that Ukraine would do its best to look into details of the tragic incident and to punish the culprits.

Corbaz came to Ukraine on a two-day visit.

The Oct. 2 shelling of Donetsk killed ICRC worker Laurent Du Pasquier, a 38-year-old Swiss citizen. The Red Cross suspended operations in Ukraine in connection with the incident. The ICRC delegation arrived in Kyiv early on Oct. 7 morning.
