Strasbourg - The Monitoring Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has supported a rapporteur's proposal to restore the voting rights of the Russian delegation to PACE, the chairman of the Russian State Duma's Foreign Affairs Committee, Alexei Pushkov, told reporters on Jan. 27.
“I have been told that the committee has supported Shennah’s proposal [PACE Monitoring Committee Chairman Stefan Shennah],” he said.
Pushkov read out a point from a draft resolution that was backed by the PACE Monitoring Committee.
According to earlier reports, a draft resolution prepared by PACE rapporteur on Russia’s credentials at PACE Stefan Shennah proposed restoring the Russian delegation’s voting rights, but limiting its right to participate in monitoring missions.
Pushkov also read out a point from a draft resolution concerning the Russian delegation’s credentials at PACE. The draft document says that the assembly retains the right to annul the credentials of Russia’s delegation at its session in June if there is no progress in implementing the Minsk memorandum and the Minsk agreements, which are aimed at settling the Ukrainian conflict, and if the assembly’s requirements and recommendations included in this resolution, primarily those calling for “the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from eastern Ukraine”, are not observed.
PACE is expected to hold a vote on the credentials of Russia’s delegation to the assembly on Wednesday afternoon, Jan. 28.
