You're reading: Pentagon: Arming Ukraine may not stop Russian aggression

Washington – The Pentagon believes that increasing sanctions on Russia would be more productive than sending arms to Ukraine.

Christine Wormuth, the U.S. defense undersecretary, has said that discussion on providing weapons to Ukraine is ongoing within the Pentagon and the White House, but she has warned of the risks.

“The potential concern has to be weighed – does Russia double down in backing the separatists and in seeking to foment unrest elsewhere in Europe,” Wormuth said, adding that the U.S. will look again at measures on strengthening existing sanctions.
