Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, in a phone call with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Monday, expressed hope that a planned summit in Milan on Oct. 16 and Oct. 17 of the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) would result in major agreements on the implementation of the peace plan for eastern Ukraine.

Renzi told Poroshenko about the program of the ASEM forum, the president’s office said in a statement.

The two leaders “reached an agreement to give instructions for planned Ukrainian-Italian meetings for the further development of bilateral relations to be organized as effectively as possible,” it said.

Earlier, Poroshenko had said he planned talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the ASEM summit.
