You're reading: Russian official: Ukrainian sanctions not frightening Russia but damage Ukraine

Possible sanctions by Kyiv against Russia are senseless and do damage to Ukraine itself, Russian State Duma international affairs committee head Alexei Pushkov said.

“Sanctions of Kyiv against Russia are as hysterical a measure as senseless. It will not frighten Moscow but will complicate the position of Ukraine even more,” Pushkov tweeted on Sept. 10.

It has been reported that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed on Sept. 10 the bill on sanctions.

According to the statement of the Ukrainian president’s press office, the law creates mechanisms of immediate responses to the threats to national interests and security of Ukraine, including hostile actions, armed attack of other countries or non-state formations, inflicting damage to people, taking hostages, obstructing stable economic development and comprehensive implementation of Ukrainian citizens’ rights and freedoms.

In accordance with the bill, special economic and other restriction measures (sanctions) can be applied by Ukraine regarding a foreign country, foreign citizens or persons without citizenship, and individuals carrying out terrorist activities. “Applying sanctions does not rule out using other protection means as well,” the statement said.

The document stipulates a list of sanctions and the procedure of introducing them. The proposals on applying restrictions, cancelling or amending sanctions are considered by the Ukrainian president, government, parliament, the National Security and Defense Council, the Ukrainian Security Service, and National Bank.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin said that the possible sanctions of Kyiv regarding Russia will have no affect on the fundamental approaches of Moscow to resolving the Ukrainian crisis.

“These sanctions will not impact our fundamental approaches to the crisis in the neighboring state,” Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aid Yury Ushakov said at a briefing on Sept. 10.
