You're reading: Turchynov says Russian humanitarian aid consists of mainly drinking water and salt

Under the guise of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, Russia wants to create a corridor to supply terrorists with tanks, multiple rocket launchers and weapons, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, Oleksandr Turchynov said.

Trading on the humanitarian aid, representatives of Russia resort to provocations, Turchynov said at a press conference in Palanga, Lithuania, on Aug. 18, the Verkhovna Rada’s press service reported.

Turchynov claims that the Russian convoy with the aid presents “mostly a fake format, as the bulk of it consists of bottles of drinking water and salt.”

“There is no problem with drinking water in the east, and it is in the town of Artemivsk in Donetsk region where Europe’s largest salt producer is located,” he said.

The parliament speaker says that the format of the “humanitarian aid” offered by Russia does not take into consideration the problems of eastern Ukraine, and is being created solely for the supply of weapons to militants.

“This is the format of their humanitarian assistance. This is assistance to death,” he said, adding that Russia won’t be able to conceal its aggression behind this.

When meeting with Lithuanian Seimas Speaker Loreta Grauziniene, Latvian Saeima Speaker Solvita Aboltina and Swedish Riksdag Chairman Per Westerberg, Turchynov stressed that the Ukrainian army “step-by-step” liberates settlements in the area of the anti-terrorist operation in the east of Ukraine.

In this context, Ukraine needs military and technical assistance in order to more effectively respond to the aggression of the Russian Federation, Turchynov said.

“History repeats itself: no compromise with an aggressor is possible. This is the compromise World War II began with,” he said.

With its aggressive action, Russia is trying to destroy the system of collective security in Europe. “It is Russia that is becoming a major threat today not only to Ukraine but also to Europe in general,” he added.
