Ukrainian military have fought off the attempts by militants to seize Donetsk airport, killing twelve of the attackers in process, the Information Center of the National Security and Defense Council reported.

Spokesman for the information and analytical center of the NSDC Andriy Lysenko said at a briefing on Saturday that the situation in the east of Ukraine remained difficult, militants continued to violate the ceasefire and were firing at the positions of the anti-terrorist operation forces.

“Donetsk airport remains the priority target for terrorists. Militants have made several regular, fortunately unsuccessful, attempts to storm the airport, and then continued shelling it. Our military repulsed all the attacks and killed twelve terrorists,” he said.

According to him, during the assault on the airport, militants used smoke bombs, which prompted the reports in social networks about the alleged use of gas.

In this context, the spokesman urged Ukrainians not to spread false information.

Lysenko also recalled that on Friday, Oct. 3, Ukrainian military in Donetsk airport received reinforcement and conducted partial rotation of personnel.
