You're reading: UN ready to engage in coordination of international humanitarian aid for Ukraine

Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon during a telephone conversation with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko suggested the UN could engage in coordination of the international humanitarian assistance for Luhansk region to ensure the observance of international law.

“President Poroshenko said that the Ukrainian government had created an interagency coordination mechanism and assured Ban Ki-moon that Ukraine was doing its best to ensure the observance of the international law and Ukrainian procedures. The head of state welcomed the willingness of the UN to engage in coordination of the international humanitarian assistance,” reads a statement posted on the Ukrainian president’s Web site on Aug.13.

At the same time, Ban Ki-moon noted that there was a growing concern over the recent developments in Ukraine. He also said that he was closely watching the situation in Ukraine and expressed the support to the Ukrainian president’s peace plan.
