SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Miners at Bulgaria's three largest coal mines are walking off the job in a row over bonuses.

Union leader Gencho Genchev said Monday that some 1,500 miners halted work at state-owned company Maritsa Iztok’s open-pit mines late Sunday.

Strikers are demanding a cash bonus due to increased output at the mine. They say management had earlier promised the bonus for all 7,100 miners.

The company says it can only pay bonuses to those directly involved in the production process, otherwise it would elapse into financial difficulty.
