SOFIA, Bulgaria — Bulgarian customs officials say they have seized 22 kilograms (48 pounds) of heroin hidden in a car at the border crossing with Turkey.

The
national customs agency said on Thursday, that the 23 packages of
drugs, worth an estimated €1.3 million ($1.6 million), were hidden in a
secret compartment of the car, which was headed to Bosnia.

Police arrested the 44-year-old Bosnian driver, who was not identified.

Bulgaria, which joined the European Union in 2007, is a major transit point for drug trafficking.
