PRAGUE — Czech authorities say they think they have uncovered the source of a methanol poisoning that has killed at least 25 people.

State prosecutor Roman Kafka says Monday that two persons from the northeastern part of the country are suspected of producing a “brutal blend” of toxic methanol with drinking alcohol, even though they had to know it could seriously damage the life of those who would drink it.

Kafka says money was the key motivation.

Martin Cervicek, the country top police officer, says the investigators believe some 15,000 liters of toxic alcohol have hit the market. Not all of it has been traced.

Cervicek says the investigation continues.

Eighteen people remain in hospital after drinking mostly vodka and rum laced with methanol.
