MILAN - An earthquake shook northern Italy on May 29, after a tremor struck the region earlier this month killing seven people and destroying hundreds of buildings.

The quake struck 40 km north of Bologna and 60 km east of Parma at a depth of 9.6 km (6 miles) according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It gave a magnitude of 5.8.

According to Italian media and local officials, at least one person was killed.

Local media also said some people had been injured in the quake, the second to hit Northern Italy in just over a week.

"There are victims … The situation is very serious, some people are stuck under the rubble," Alberto Silvestri, the mayor of the San Felice sul Panaro told Italian television channel SkyTG24.
