BERLIN (AP) — The German government says Chancellor Angela Merkel will meet French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Berlin next week as the eurozone attempts to get a grip on its long-running debt crisis.

Merkel’s office said the two leaders will meet at the chancellery on Jan. 9. It said the meeting will serve to "prepare for upcoming European appointments," in particular a European Union summit on Jan. 30.

That meeting follows an agreement by most EU leaders in early December to draw up a new intergovernmental treaty meant to stabilize the 17-nation euro.
